Work Clothes/Play Clothes June 2014

Work Clothes. These shoes! I have a couple pairs of shoes in my closet that I consider show stoppers. These are one of them. Red at the toe, black at the heel and that sexy ankle strap. The only challenge with such a shoe is that you can’t wear them too often since they are so flashy or the fun will wear off.

Play Clothes. I realize this pose makes me look at little pregnant, but I don’t like my legs in most of the photos Brent took of me in this dress, so this one will have to do. Isn’t it strange how our insecurities work? I’d rather look pregnant than post a photo where I don’t like my legs. I’ve disliked my calves and ankles since someone told me I had cankles in high school and even though I know it’s silly, I’ve carried around that insecurity ever since.

Play Clothes. You are now entering the portion of my fashion post where I become utterly obsessed with a pair of Swedish Hasbeens. (I’m wearing them in all the remaining outfit pics) These are basically the perfect shoe. Since they are a bit of an investment, I love that they are versatile enough that I can wear them from the summer right through to winter. I also like they look equally great with a pair of cut-off jean shorts or a dress.  Minx has a great collection of Swedish Hasbeens on their online shop include a great neutral pair with lower heel and some fun red ones!

Work Clothes. I was pushing the limits a little bit on work appropriate wear with these funky pants but then again, I always do that. I rarely ever dress down for work but I do tend to dress kind of loud. It’s just part of my personality and something I really own. I will never show up in a crazy hat or something too tight but I can’t promise you I won’t wear wacky pants or crazy patterns together.  I love to express my personality through clothes.

Work Clothes. Well, I’m already eating my words. I just said I rarely dress down, but here I am immediately following it with a work outfit involving jeans. It was a Friday with no meetings, so I took the opportunity to wear something a little more casual.

So now that I’ve shared some of my favorite outfits. I’ve got a couple of sort-of related questions for all of you.

1. Do you think it’s a risky move to dress boldly in a corporate America environment? Or is standing out (within reason!) from a satorial perspective a good thing?

2. Do you have a weird body insecurity that stems from a single incident? I’ve had worse things said to me about my appearance, but for some reason, that cankle comment has been one of the few that really stuck over the years.

Love,

M

Work Clothes/Play Clothes

Here are some things I wore to work and to play.

Work Clothes

I love this outfit and especially these shoes. I got them off Zulily last summer for dirt cheap. I think they were around $22 and it never fails that someone will stop to compliment them. The red toe is super bold but so much fun and they are actually pretty comfortable.

Headed out for a family dinner in this shot. The slouchy, printed pants craze is one I fully support. It’s like wearing fancy pajama pants in public. These shoes were another cheap Zulily find - If you feel like you can’t ever find anything good on Zulily, follow my Pinterest board. I try to go in a couple times a week and pin anything I find on the site that is a great deal or really cool.

Play Clothes & Work Clothes

I wore this outfit to church one Sunday and loved it so much that I wore it work the next day. Both the top and bottom are super, super soft cotton and it felt so flowly and light. Every fall and spring I buy a pair of black and a pair of neutral shoes to be my go-to dress up shoe for the season. These shoes are my new neutral shoes for spring/summer 2014 and I’ve already worn them a ton. You can’t tell in this photo, but they have a chunky heel which makes them really comfortable!

Shirt: Kensie (from a Stitch Fix last year)

Skirt: Sugar Magnolia

Shoes: Charles David

Everly Wears:

Top: Baby Lulu (Like many of her tops, this used to be a dress when she was smaller)

Pants: Target

Shoes: Zulily

Arlo Wears:

Vest: It came as part of his suit from his halloween costume

Shirt: Hand me down

Pants: Ruum Kids. (Ruum has some great sales on a regular basis. I bought these in several colors when they were on super sale for $6 each last month. I think the girl’s jeans fit my skinny boy great and have the elastic tabs at the waist to adjust to fit.)

Shoes: Converse with added shwings

Hat: We picked it up in the Zutano store on our trip to Vermont last year because it matches Brent’s favorite hat.

This is one of my favorite vintage dresses but I don’t wear it often because I find white to be a challenging color to wear. Brent bought it for me for my birthday five years ago.

Perhaps my favorite outfit of the bunch. I felt so good in this look. We had double date plans with some friends of ours last Friday night in our neighborhood. We had planned to ride our bikes, but a quick thunderstorm just before we were set to leave convinced us to drive instead. This drapey, jersey dress is a closet staple because it is so comfortable and the cut makes it really interesting. I like to belt it because it’s a little big in the waist.

Work Clothes/Play Clothes

Oh man! How long has it been since I did a fashion post? I went back and looked and it’s been nearly four months! I used to do these monthly and hope that with the warmer weather on the way and a slow down in my schedule that I’ll be able to document more of the clothes I wear to work and to play.

image

Play Clothes.

I wore this so long ago, I’m not entirely sure where I wore it- but this is my kind of outfit. I love this cropped, long sleeve top because it allows me to wear my maxi dresses during winter. Also, these black boots are a wardrobe staple - they go with EVERYTHING!

Banded Crop Top: c/o Minx Boutique (Bonus- it’s only $26!)

Maxi Dress: Forever21

Work Clothes.

This is pushing it in terms of work appropriate but I’ve definitely been guilty of wearing things to the office every now and then that were probably more suited for the weekend. I love how layering a sweater with a sleeveless dress created an entirely new look. I was self concious and tugged at the bottom of this dress all day!  I think I wouldn’t have worried if my hemline was about two inches longer. Even if I did like the outfit, I don’t think I’ll be wearing this particular dress again any time soon!

I wore this right before the holidays and joked that I looked like Santa clause with my red shirt and big brass belt buckle! You can’t tell it in this photo, but this shirt has a pretty brass colored sequined color that made it really fun to wear. Also, I have been wearing these black heels TO DEATH!

I totally love this photo of me and my silly kids! I got really into this sweater/dress layer technique over the winter and so I did it A LOT. Here I’ve layered my favorite fisherman sweater underneath a really fun little graphic dress. I felt great in this!

Ooof. This is a bit of a rough photo (Arlo hasn’t been sleeping well lately, so neither have we!) and the state of my roots is just beyond at this point (Those unexpected household expenses keep pushing “get my hair done” further and further down on the things to pay for list) But despite all of it, I loved this outfit, so I’ve decided to post it anyway. We were having a little Valentine’s day themed event at work and so I wanted to wear something to fit the day. I never fail to get one million compliments when I wear this skirt. And also —- I loved the shoes the Minx sent me so much in black that I bought myself the taupe pair too. They are definitely the most versatile shoes in my closet.

So that’s what I’ve been wearing lately! I promise not to wait so long to post my next Work Clothes/Play Clothes post.

Work Clothes/Play Clothes

Eeek! It has been quite awhile since I’ve done a fashion post. This collection of outfits have fallen in that sweet spot just as the seasons began to change- some days were warm and sunny and others were blustery and cold. Here are some thing I work to work and to play:

image

Work Clothes.

My first tights of the year! As with all things winter related at the moment, I was excited to wear them. It usually goes like this: YAY! Cold Weather! I’m wearing tights! I love this coat! Hooray scarves! I know that come February I am ready to throw all of the above to the far corners of my closest in exchange for bare legs and arms - but right now, I’m loving layering up.   Aren’t these wedges beautiful? Minx Boutique sent me the black ones and I loved them so much I bought the neutral taupe color ones too. They are my go-to shoes this season, playful, versatile and comfortable!

Top: THML (Stitch Fix last year)

Action shot - Wheeee! I love this skirt so much I’m featuring it in two different outfits photos in this post. I love that it’s flowy and lined and has POCKETS. I’m a big fan of the bold fall colors and pattern mixing in this look.

Top: c/o Minx Boutique (Last year. Here is the same shirt in a solid color)

Skirt: Mais Oui Dot Skirt c/o Minx Boutique

Shoes: (I don’t remember the brand - they are about 4 years old)

Play Clothes.

Happy weekend! This shot cracks me up - Everly insisted she wanted to be in this photo, but then proceeded to hold that book over her face the entire time. Whatever floats your boat, kiddo! On the weekend, I love to hide my unwashed hair under this old hat and this kimono was a favorite Ebay find. I couldn’t fathom spending $120+ on the ones I saw in the latest Free People catalog, but I scored this one for about $45.

Jeans: Kensie (Stitch Fix)

Boots: MIA Nanette boots

It was really cold this day, so I just kept it simple and classic. Riding boots, a great black jacket and a pop of color in this awesome scarf. I’m not a huge fan of this photo (What’s my knee doing?) but I liked this outfit enough that I decided to include it anyway.

My favorite outfit of the bunch! I was actually inspired by this look on Minx blog and decided to recreate using similar pieces in my closet. I love being inspired by others to reinterpret their looks into something that works for me. I keep a whole folder on Pinterest of Fashion Inspirations to help inspire me when I’m in a fashion rut. I loved wearing this look and will definitely wear it again.

So there you go! Some of the things I’ve been wearing lately. Scarves and boots and tights galore!

M

P.S. A little unrelated but a few of you have emailed me about doing more Kid Fashion posts and Zulily finds. Instead of taking up blog posts, I’ve started a Zulily Favorites board on Pinterest. I spend about 15 minutes every morning perusing the site for my favorites and have started adding them all to this pinterest board. Follow along if you’re interested!

I absolutely love the geometric/futuristic prints on this skirt. It’s funky enough that I let it stand out but keeping everything else neutral, except for a pop of color in my necklace. I don’t usually wear heels this high to the office, but I was feeling particularly sassy this day.

I look forward to white jeans season all year round. I don’t adhere to the Easter-to-Labor Day rule that some people do re: wearing white, but I do tend to only wear them during warmer months. These are J Brand - which are my absolute favorite jeans. The only thing I don’t like about J Brand is the price, so I found these at a significant discount on ebay.

Dirty hair don’t care! I threw this on to go run some errands one Sunday. The weekend are all about no makeup and stretching my need to wash my hair just a little longer. I found this top at Marshall’s recently for $16 dollars and I’m completely in love with it.

Date night attire! This skirt from Minx hit my doorstep on Saturday and I couldn’t wait to wear it. I have always been the type that wants to wear something new immediately. When I was a kid, I used to insist on wearing my new shoes out of the store because I couldn’t even stand to wait until we got home to strap them on.  Some things never change!

Everyone wanted in on this shot! Seeing Gibson in the background just makes it even better. Taking daily outfit pictures isn’t really possible, so capturing what I wore depends on how late I’m running and whether or not everyone is in a good mood! (And from the look on Everly’s face, we might have judged wrong on this day.) This dress is made by Ark & Co. - one of my absolute favorite labels. I consistently love the quality and design of their pieces. This dress is also shorter than I would normally wear to work, but the longer sleeves tone it down a bit - and since it was my last week at work, I figured - hey why not!

I wore this to work yesterday. One of my best girls at work tried to tell me I looked like a hipster in this. We had a solid five minute disagreement over it. I say this look is more J Crew inspired - she says it is Urban Outfitters all the way. Personally, I think I’m too old and responsible to be a hipster!

Work Clothes/Play Clothes

In compiling photos from the last month for this post, I realized I had a lot more dressed up looks than what truly represents my day to day. I am definitely a jeans/shorts and casual top type of girl when I’m not working - but when it comes to the office, I’ve stepped up my game a bit on what I like to wear. My company has a business casual dress code and you can wear jeans as long as they aren’t ripped. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how I want to dress the part when it comes to being successful in my role. The clothes certainly don’t make the woman, but dressing up a bit makes me feel great and gives me a little extra confidence to walk into the office every day like I mean business. (Cue the the Rue Paul Anthem Work it Girl here. Shante shante!)

I wore this dress to two weddings this spring and it has been a power piece in my closet for over five years now. It is hands down the most perfect black dress I have ever worn! I love that it has a bit of retro feel but still looks modern and super feminine. I feel elegant every time I wea it, so I take every chance I get!  The gorgeous vintage belt was a gift from my godmother and the black clutch was a Christmas present from my father a few years ago.

I had an important meeting this day and I worried for a moment that the bold print of the skirt paired with this blouse might be too much- but I loved the combo and felt great in it, so I went for it. I kept the shoes neutral to balance things out. This skirt has been one of my favorite recent purchases. It’s also super affordable at only $22.99 at Target (Lucky you - it’s on sale this week for less than $20 here ) . I want to go back and see if they have it in any other prints in this style. It looks and feels far more expensive than it was!

Thanks to the grandparents, Brent and I found ourselves with a rare mid-day chunk of time to do something together a few weekends ago. We jumped at the chance and headed downtown to do some exploring. There are a bunch of new boutiques and shops that I’ve been wanting to explore and afterwards, we met up with some friends for a beer on the patio at the bar where we met. There are two elements of this outfit I really love - first, the felt hat. It was a hand-me-down from my mother in law that has quickly become my favorite hat ever. I wear it several times a week. And these gorgeous oxfords. They are handmade in Brooklyn but a super cool shoe company called Bed|Stu . More on them soon (including a reader giveaway) but I love how incredibly comfortable and stylish these beauties are.

There’s that leopard print skirt again! I wore it a lot this past month because I love it so much. In this look, I kept it a bit more neutral and paired it with a pretty cream peplum top and added a bright element in these gorgeous suede wedges. These wedges are so comfortable and I love this pretty coral colors.

Dress: Stitch Fix

Belt: An old one I’ve had forever

Shoes: c/o Minx Boutique

I wore this over the Fourth of July holiday. We met some friends in Durham to check out some cool kid-friendly spots and grab lunch. I usually don’t like to be matchy matchy - but I thought these wedges were the perfect compliment to the trim on this dress. This little frock was just a titch too short for me (It’s not a real WC/PC post until I admit that at least once, right?) but I loved it, so I wore it anyway. This outfit definitely kept me comfortable on a hot day!

Summer is definitely my favorite time of the year when it comes to fashion. I love the strappy shoes, the bare legs and the bright colors. I’m looking forward to a July full of all three!

Best,

M

Here’s what I wore to work and to play in May.

image

Play Clothes.

I wore this to church and it felt light and feminine. I have a little story about these shoes. A sweet online friend sent me an email one day and asked if I might be interested in a pair of beautiful shoes she had sitting in her closet. She had loved them, and bought them on a whim, but they had sat in her closet for some time with very little wear. She thought they looked like my style and wondered if I might be interested in them. They are a creamy, light, yellow color which can be a little challenging to pair up, but man oh man are they stunning shoes. I have made an effort to wear them regularly and build outfits around them to do justice to the generous gift she sent my way. Every time I wear them, I think about Justine and try to show these pretty shoes a little adventure in her honor!

I’ve fallen in love with these little turquoise kitten heels from Seychelles. Despite their vibrant color, I’ve taken to wear them like a neutral. I’ve worn them with a coral dress, a yellow skirt (pictured here) and plenty of other outfits that include color or bold prints. They’re unexpected and fun… and the short heel height makes them great for chasing the kids or walking to a lunch meeting downtown.

I had to go in the office this day, but this was a special one because it was also Everly’s Mothers Day tea party at school. She picked out my shoes and I chose the top and skirt to go with it. This outfit is a little playful and quirky, and I felt great in it.

I think this is my favorite outfit of the bunch. This mint color is one of my favorites to wear because I think it compliments my pale skin. I’m also happy to report that I FINALLY got my hair done a few days after this photo was taken - it looks like I was trying to go for the ombre look the old fashion way with that root grow out - yikes!!

Always his best accessory: Those killer strawberry blonde curls!

I always have fun with these posts and it’s fun to pick out a few of my favorite outfits from the month to feature on the blog. One day I’ll have to do a post of all of the outfit that have never made the cut- there are some REALLY bad ones in the mix! That post should be titled “What Was I Thinking When I Wore This to Work or To Play?”  I definitely have my share of fashion missteps - but the older I get, the more I feel like I’m beginning to hone in on my specific style. One thing is for sure, I sure do love a pretty skirt and a fun pair of shoes.

This Work Clothes/Play Clothes is a little different than my usual. This time, my friends at Tieks by Gavrieli challenged me to wear their amazing leather flats every day for an entire week (best challenge I’ve ever been given, that’s for sure). I’m definitely a high heels girl, but these soft little shoes have been turning me into a major fan of flats. I’ve talked about my love of Tieks before, but since I’ve started wearing them constantly, the thing that amuses me most is how many other women are as obsessed with them as I am. I have had women stop me in airports, around town and in the office to say, “Oh my gosh. Are those Tieks? Aren’t they amazing?”   I have many conversations about them with other women who have spotted their trademark aqua blue soles and wanted to gush over how comfortable they are.

Here is what I wore to work and to play during my Week of Tieks:

image

Sunday: Play Clothes.

This was a gorgeous day in Raleigh. We went vintage shopping and ate lunch outside on the patio of one of my favorite places downtown. It was still a bit cool, so I kept my sleeves and skirt long, but this was one of the first real “warmer” days that preluded spring.

Monday: Work Clothes.

A quick Monday morning outfit. I was in the mood for jeans and a tshirt but I tried to dress it up a bit for the office by adding the jacket, scarf and the sparkle from my shoes. Super comfortable, but pulled together enough for a day full of planning meetings.

I got this blouse at Forever21 last month and I love the length and the cut of it. It was pretty on its own, but I always love color, so I paired it with a sunny scarf and red lips.

Wednesday: Work/Play Clothes

I worked from home on this day, so while I was technically working, this outfit played double duty as a play outfit since we had evening plans with friends.  This is the second fashion outfit in a month where I’ve looked back at a photo and thought…whoa that dress is a lot shorter than I remember. I think the cold hard truth that I’ve finally aged out of most of my mini dresses has hit.  Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Thursday: Work Clothes

hahahah. Oh, this pose! I’m rolling my eyes at myself as I type this. This is standard work attire for me - A pretty blouse, a blazer and a pair of skinny jeans. Most of the time I would pair this with a pair of heels, but I was more than happy to swap them out for my trusty Tieks.

I loved this outfit. I felt feminine and put together  and the warmer temps meant bare legs! I talk about this belt every so often, but my Godmother gave me this buckle that once belonged to her grandmother. I absolutely cherish it and love how it instantly adds character to whatever I am wearing.

Saturday: Play Clothes

Hooray hooray! Shorts weather! Most of this day was spent playing with the kids and running errands.  I decided to forgo makeup and was lucky enough to get a second day out of my curls (I love when that happens). I wanted something casual cool and this outfit did the trick. I would wear this lightweight, terry blazer every day if I could.

Blazer: Tart

Tshirt: American Apparel

Shorts: Sanctuary

Belt: Forever21

Shoes: Cardinal Red Tieks

It was fun to give myself the challenge to wear the same shoes every day for a week. Even though I documented these outfits several weeks ago, I find myself wearing Tieks 3 or 4 times a week now. There is a reason these shoes made Oprah’s Favorite things list, and why every woman I know who owns a pair is gaga over them too. They’re fun to wear, go with everything, and are so incredibly comfortable. I’m a Tieks girl for life now.

Love,

M

The Tieks featured in this post were gifted to me by the company. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Here are some things I wore to work and to play in February and March.

I keep talking about them - but I’m obsessed with these crop trousers from Target. They have had them in a rainbow of colors over the months and are priced right around $25 a pop. Hello winter pale legs!  The combination of spring weather + a quick dinner alone with Brent had me itching to wear something fun. Jeans and a comfy top would have been just fine, but I was looking for an excuse to wear something outside the scope of my day to day wardrobe. Any chance to dress up a bit! Looking at it now, I think this dress is just a wee bit short for me, but I felt good in it anyway.

And these heels…. oh how I am in love. These two-tone beauties have already been designated my favorite statement heels for spring. I also love that they are so reasonably priced ($62.00) for such a stand out shoe.

Play Clothes.

This weekend outfit was for running a few errands (in my comfy swedish clogs) and playing in the yard (barefoot). After a week of everyone being sick and wearing yoga pants, I wanted to put on something bright and cheery.

These Kensie jeans were in my last Stitch Fix and I absolutely love them. I have worn them constantly and I love the fit and cut. I originally put this outfit together without the chambray top underneath, but it felt a little too belly-revealing to run errands in so I added an extra layer.

Ha ha ha. I can’t stop laughing at this photo. Brent snapped a couple of shots for this outfit and while there were several without her hand in my face, this one is still my favorite. She recently picked up the “Mama, smell my hand” routine and most often we say, “No thank you. I would prefer not to.” but she still insists on it anyway. Typically she wants us to smell the hand soap she just used or that they smell like oranges from her lunch - but with a toddler you just NEVER KNOW where those hands have been and smelling them is a risk I’m not always willing to take! Ok, totally sidetracked - but that’s what she is doing in this photo and it makes me giggle to think about.

February and early March have been kind of all over the place weather wise - some nice mild days and some colder temps too. I’m eager to start wearing more more short sleeves and sleeveless tops and bare legs. I love spring and the fashion changes it brings with it!

Work Clothes/Play Clothes

Gotta squeeze in a fashion post before the end of the month.  Here are some things I wore to work and to play:

I’m all kinds of in love with this black blazer. I’ve worn it constantly lately and I love the leather trim on the lapel. It also has a really cute accordian pleat detail in the back.

I wore this on a pretty Sunday when the temps were in the 70s and I couldn’t wait to just enjoy bare legs. We were headed to a birthday party, but afterwards I made a run to the grocery store. Two different women stopped me and told me how much they loved my outfit. It made me feel so great that I couldn’t stop smiling. This skirt is actually two layered together - a pretty soft pink one and a vintage crinoline underneath.

I didn’t snap a photo of this outfit on our big camera, so this slightly grainy one from my instagram feed will have to do. I bought these wedge sneakers on a whim last fall because I thought they were fun. Whenever I wear them, I try to keep the rest of my outfit pretty neutral because they carry an outfit on their own with their bright pink and red design.  This was a fun Sunday that included brunch at a favorite neighborhood spot and a visit to the partk

I went with Brent to see him play a show outside Charlotte. I always like to play with soft & edgy combinations and this outfit is a good example of that. I originally wore this short sleeved dress to the rehearsal dinner of one of my best friend’s weddings last fall and haven’t put it on since. It’s too pretty to be sitting in my closet until spring!

Colors, patterns and red lips! We did some adventuring last weekend and happened upon a neat little collection of vintage and antique shops. It was closed when we went, but we plan to go back this week to check it out again.

So there you go- Some outfits I wore in January. There is usually at least one outfit I’m iffy about, but I actually like all of these looks this month. A couple feminine looks, some playful and a lots of color. While comparing them all for this post - it got me thinking that I’m not certain I could define my personal style. Romantic? Classic? Sporty? I think I’m all over the place!

Love,

M
